Nazareth Community Housing
Located within an existing campus of Nazareth House nursing home, this scheme of 49 sheltered social houses for the Nazareth Housing Association was designed to complement the existing building in terms of architectural style and siting, whilst maintaining a domestic scale familiar to the elderly residents. High-quality materials have been used throughout, such as cedar cladding, Aluclad windows, natural stone and zinc; materials not frequently associated with social housing.
A carefully selected extensive landscaping scheme compliments the existing mature grounds and enhances the amenity value of the campus, even down to the inclusion of many fruit-bearing trees for harvest by the residents. Large attractive shared open spaces and semi-private individual rear patios are laid out to encourage interaction between neighbours to aid the development of a sense of community, essential for the contentedness and security of the residents.
The east of the site is bounded by a busy national primary route and the houses are carefully nestled behind a solid stone wall to provide privacy, aural and visual protection from the highway.
The development is designed exclusively for elderly residents in need of protected accommodation and all houses were designed with full wheelchair accessibility to cater for the possible lifetime needs of the residents.
