Hamilton Young Architects are delighted that planning permission has been granted by Galway City Council for our new Rosedale Special School project at the Woodlands Campus, Renmore, Galway.
This exciting project consists of the provision of a new replacement school of 3,640 m2 with an additional 39m2 external store. The new special needs school will contain 14 no. classrooms, specialist classrooms, therapy rooms, pupil dining spaces, medical suite and staff/ administrative facilities. A General Purpose hall, kitchen and laundry facilities are also included to fully address the needs of the pupils.
The school is designed to function in two sections, one for pre-school pupils and one for older pupils through to post primary level interconnected by common areas and shared facilities.
The buildings “U” shape is derived from the shape of the site and the requirements of the brief. The majority of the classrooms have a favourable east facing aspect with direct access to open spaces. The “U” shaped building forms a landscaped courtyard that optimises site area and forms an effective barrier to the strong prevailing winds and rain from the south west. This courtyard is landscaped to provide a calm and defensible space with ample natural light.
